Sony Playstation Atlas laser Repair Kit
A-Tech the Distributor of Atlas Laser repair kits in the US
Before purchase of an Atlas kit, please note the following:

The Atlas laser repair kit is designed to repair the worn parts of the laser unit, this repair can improve the overall performance of the lasers ability to read and load CDRs, improving FMV and sound skipping problems. One must still understand that GOLD and or, GREEN / GOLD CDR's are still troublesome CDR's to load, and the kit will improve their ability to load, but they may still experience small amounts of skipping due to their reflective surface structure.

For this reason we will always recommend "MITSUBISHI sliver/blue" CDR's. They are better suited to the PSX laser, and they will greatly improve the performance of your laser problems, if anything removing skipping problems all together. Buy them, try them, and use them if they work. If people still insist on using GOLD media, they will get what they deserve.

This kit has been designed to improve existing laser units in SCPH-100x Playstations (Plastic laser chassis only) that experience the following problems:

  • skipping Full Motion Video playback
  • skipping sound
  • long loading times
  • works better when console is positioned upsidedown
  • infamous problems like unable to load Gold CDR's
  • weird problems like Mitsubishi CDR's load but TDK won't!

Yes, this kit will improve your problems related to bad or worn out laser units. Once installed, you will be able to play all your games (original and CDR/HK) with improved readability of the CDs resulting in better playback from FMV, sound, and video, or even games that mysteriously lockup due to laser problems.

How to tell if your laser housing is worn?

To the right is a picture of the laser housing and the laser pickup. Line up the edge of the two surfaces with your eye, and see if there is a misalignment of the two surfaces. If there is, this is a primary sign that your housing is worn.
How does this wear effect the ability to read a CD?

For a laser to read the data on a CD, the laser must be reflected back to the pickup perfectly to be able to read the data correctly, this image shows why a worn laser housing effects the ability to read CD's correctly. If the alignment is not accurate enough, the data is not read, and the console will hunt until it reads the data it expects, (Long loading times, and lockups!). In the case of Full motion Video scenes, the missed frames are just ignored,(because FMV is played back in real time) and you will observe skipping (missing frames!) in your FMV scenes, and jumpy sound.
The kit comes with a detailed manual with pictures on all procedures of installation outlined clearly. The kit could be installed by a novice in less than 30 mins. A technician could install these kits in less than 15 mins or less. (Retail Price - $14.95)
